In 2013, D Stevens was awarded Commercial Project of the Year for the St John’s Ambulance Redevelopment in Gisborne. The most challenging aspect of the build was maintaining the project was completed on time and within budget. St John had set a deadline for completion and there was little room to move - due to the fact they were leasing a building fixed term with no time extensions available. Unlike the Police and Fire Service, the government provides no funding to St John for the buildings it operates from, so it was up to the Local Area Committee to raise the money for the project. One challenge the committee faced while raising funds for the project was the number of other worthy charitable projects taking place at the time – including the Rescue Helicopter, and Christchurch Earthquake Relief. D Stevens was mindful of the funding issues and aimed to meet the deadline by carefully managing all site progress and limiting any obstacles that may interrupt work. We had to keep tight control of the project costs and identify any savings that could be made to keep within the budget. Subsequently the building was completed on time, to budget, with no compromise made on the high-quality finish and integrity of the building.
