Russell street house
Conceived as both house and private retreat by architects Malcolm Walker Architects, this compact house occupies an elevated section in the central city suburb of Whataupoko.
The renovation comprised of removing all internal linings back to timber framed structure and reconfiguring the house to create a modern setting. A minor extension was made to the ground floor to create a master bedroom with the upper level serving as guest lodging. The material palette is limited and restrained – light oak flooring with a softly coloured walls – allowing the magnificent native bush views to be the main focus of every room.
The overriding concern of the client’s brief was to capture the privacy and casual lifestyle offered by the inner city site. The house has been renovated to be used in a fluid way, with almost continuous connection between internal and external spaces.
