TUAHINE HOUSE

2016

RESIDENTIAL

Located on the east coast of Gisborne – a compact, simple house sits nestled in the foothills of Tuahine Point. Tuahine House is a small residential structure set within the coastal crescent of Wainui Beach, Gisborne.

The strong horizontal lines of the cladding softly integrate the building into the high hills, exposed rock faces and ever-changing beachside environment. The internal environment is both muscular and refined, referencing the toughness of the environment while providing the comfort required for a small family retreat at the beach. Similarly, the cellular rooms are succinctly set about a northeast-facing living space, providing further retreat, shelter, warmth and comfort from the raw exposed beachfront.

Care has been made to limit the scale of the building and maintain a sense of 'cottage'. The soft exterior and interior colour palette is completed by the ease of which the house occupies the exposed site. The architecture seeks to be a subtle insertion in the coastal landscape.
