House + Home – 2018

Located at the rear of a recently renovated 1930s family home, this brand new kitchen is imbued with a sense of calm and tranquillity. Bold contrasting colour are complimented by subtle details resulting in a highly functional, modern family kitchen for working and gathering within.

From the first meeting with our client the brief was to create a functional, contemporary, family kitchen with plenty of space and storage to run her food styling, photography and recipe development business from. The challenge for our designers and joiners was to create a kitchen that fulfilled the necessities of everyday family life while also meeting the expectations of a semi-commercial kitchen suitable for work.

The aesthetic of the kitchen is crisp and concise with simple block colours emphasising the different workspaces. Natural light floods into the space through new timber framed windows and is reflected and absorbed by the bright whites and dramatic deep-blue hues of the kitchen surfaces. The kitchen features Prime Acrylic White Gloss cupboard faces throughout and a striking Melteca Acrylic Soft-Touch Blue Night island bench and storage wall. A Caesarstone benchtop finished in Sleek Concrete compliments the colours of the kitchen and provides a hard wearing surface to work from. The strong contrast of materials, along with the dark-stained timber flooring, has created the perfect backdrop for our client to photograph food in.

Working alongside the client we have created plenty of storage throughout the kitchen. An oversized pantry provides easy and quick access to large appliances and ingredients when the kitchen is in use. The large sliding doors ensure the pantry can be closed off and any mess hidden away when entertaining.

Details like the Heritage Aoraki Alphina black sink bowl, and the Ezi Venice Brushed Nickel hardware, maintain the clean lines of this kitchen design. Overhead cupboards in the deep blue storage wall are fitted with push-to-open hinges eliminating any visual clutter of face-fixed handles. The overhead cupboards are also fitted with seismic catches to prevent anything falling out in an earthquake. Finally, a glass splashback has been carefully colour-matched with the wall paint finishes so as not to detract from the beauty of the kitchen cabinetry and the 1930s styling of the home. Considered details and precise manufacturing further enhance the overall design aesthetic of the kitchen.

This kitchen represents not only an exploration of form and function within the context of the clients’ brief but also a journey of colour and expression that is reflective of the family who gather within the kitchen.
