At DStevens we believe that the human experience is improved through the built environment around us. This belief unites our 25 staff, and it is evident across all the work we do. The pursuit of construction excellence lies at the core of our company, across a diverse range of construction, joinery and interiors projects.
We spend a significant amount of time in the initial stages of a project to understand what clients, businesses, and their people will need from a space. Without this background knowledge, it would be easy to create an environment that doesn't reflect the people that use it daily.
DStevens has delivered a wide range of diverse, complex projects and has a reputation for delivering high quality and enduring built work. We are a locally owned business with over 60 years experience in the building industry. Founded in 1955 by Derek Stevens, DStevens is now managed by his son Peter Stevens.
Being the only third generation construction company in Gisborne - DStevens has evolved from a generalist firm into a multidisciplinary company offering construction, joinery and interior design services.
Over the years we have been very successful at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year and Commercial Project Awards. DStevens has been successful on a national level taking 10 projects to the National House of the Year Awards. In 2006 we won the local Supreme Awards for both residential and commercial categories with a 3-storey house at Wainui Beach and a large office complex in Gladstone Road, Gisborne.
DStevens had further success at the 2012 Registered Master Builders House of the Year East Coast Awards winning a Gold Award for the Placemaker’s Renovation Category for a major house renovation in Aberdeen Road, Gisborne.
In 2013, DStevens was awarded Commercial Project of the Year for the St John Ambulance Redevelopment in Gisborne. The most challenging aspect of the build was maintaining the project was completed on time and within budget. Unlike the Police and Fire Service, the government provides no funding to St John for the buildings it operates from, so it was up to the Local Area Committee to raise the money for the project. DStevens was mindful of the funding issues and aimed to meet the deadline by carefully managing all site progress and limiting any obstacles that may interrupt work. We kept a tight control of the project costs and identied any savings that could be made to keep the project within budget. Subsequently the building was completed on time, to budget, with no compromise made on the high-quality finish and integrity of the building. On receiving the award, Peter Stevens dedicated the project to his father, the late Derek Stevens, who founded the company over 60 years ago.
We have carried out numerous projects over the 60 years we have been in the construction industry. Attention to detail and the ability to work with a wide range of materials is one of our strengths. We believe that our experience is of great value to every project we undertake.
Quality control is something that is extremely important to us. We build our reputation on the success of our previous projects and pride ourselves on our high level of workmanship. Our high standards deliver great results.
